ਸ਼ਹੀਦੀ ਬੁੰਗਾ

Shaheedi Bunga

The place of the martyrs.

Amritsar

Around this sarovar stood more than seventy bungas.

Raised by the misls and the jathas who kept watch over the Darbar Sahib. Each one was a residence — and each one was a school.

What was taught

Santhiya. Shastar vidya. Itihaas. Kirtan.

A bunga was where a Sikh came to learn to read Gurbani correctly, to hold a shastar, to keep the rehat, and to sing the raags as they were given.

What happened to them

Almost all of them were pulled down.

Cleared through the last century as the parikrama was widened. Of more than seventy, a handful of towers still stand at the sarovar’s edge.

The one we are named for

Shaheedan da Bunga.

The bunga of the shaheedi jatha — the Singhs who gave their heads for the Panth, and taught in between. The building is gone. The teaching was never the building.

Students teaching worldwide

So we raise it again, on whatever ground we are given.

A gurdwara hall in Leicester on a Tuesday night. A vidyala in Panjab. And students who learned here, now teaching where they live. A bunga is not a place. It is what happens inside it.
